The paradox of the HSC

It is a strange paradox to live through the HSC. We are told this is an individual contest, a private desk, a unique candidate number, a silent examination room where your future is weighing on your shoulders. The world tells us it’s every student for themselves.

But the truth is; God never designed us for isolation, especially not in our seasons of trial. There is a beauty in stepping outside the the repetitive loops of our own thoughts and realizing we are part of something so much larger than an exam timetable. The HSC asks us to look inward, to trust in our own intellect, and to view those around us as the curve we are measured against, however faith turns that entire narrative upside down.  Ecclesiastes reminds us that “Two are better than one… for if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.”

The HSC tries to tell us we are competitors, but walking through this season with faith teaches us that really, we are companions,

and that companionship reaches far beyond the classroom walls. Behind every student at a single desk is a sanctuary of support.

Parents who quietly watch the weight we carry, silently worrying if the pressure is becoming too heavy for our hearts and minds, families who patiently absorb the snappiness and short tempers when our stress overflows, and teachers who go far beyond the lesson plans; staying late, giving us extra time we know they don’t have, and pouring so much of their heart and love into making sure we don’t just pass, but that we feel truly cared for along the way. Because ultimately when the ink dries and the silence settles, the ranks will fade into a memory, but the character built, the prayers shared, and the love given to one another will remain. So yes, the HSC is stressful and draining… but look beneath the pressure, and you’ll find a story of incredible support, and the quiet power of human connection.
